Kenntnisprüfung · Recognition · Germany

Kenntnisprüfung in Germany: when is it required and what is examined?

A Kenntnisprüfung, a knowledge examination, is not a universal requirement for everyone with a foreign qualification.

Whether it becomes part of your pathway depends on your profession, the origin of your qualification and the professional law that applies to it. What matters is not that your qualification comes from abroad, but which German profession and which procedure apply to you.

A foreign qualification does not automatically mean a Kenntnisprüfung.

In short

In regulated health professions such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and nursing, the Kenntnisprüfung (knowledge examination) is the route when the competent authority finds substantial differences to your training that your professional experience does not compensate. It tests your specialist knowledge at the level of the German final examination, usually orally and on case examples. Whether you need it is stated in the authority's decision, not decided by your country of origin.

First the profession, then the examination

Not every foreign professional qualification leads to a Kenntnisprüfung

The Kenntnisprüfung belongs to specific recognition and professional-licensing procedures. Other professions follow other routes entirely. You usually reach this question in the middle of a recognition process, not at its beginning.

This is why searching for “Kenntnisprüfung Germany” in general is rarely enough to determine your own requirement: the rule that applies to you follows your profession and your procedure.

Context A · Regulated profession

Access to the profession or the professional title depends on statutory requirements.

  • Recognition of the qualification is generally required
  • A compensation measure can be part of the route
  • A knowledge or aptitude examination can be provided for
  • Language and further licensing requirements can apply separately

Context B · Non-regulated profession

Recognition can be useful, but professional access does not follow the same licensing model.

  • Equivalence assessment against a German reference occupation
  • Full or partial equivalence can be established
  • Differences can be addressed through an Anpassungsqualifizierung
  • No statutory Kenntnisprüfung in this model

Context C · Profession with its own sector law

The exact route follows the specific federal or state regulation for that profession.

  • Which measure applies is set out in the relevant professional act
  • Rules can differ between qualification origins
  • Responsibilities can differ between federal states

First identify the profession. Then identify the examination.

What the examination is for

A Kenntnisprüfung examines professional knowledge, not your paperwork

In certain recognition procedures, the Kenntnisprüfung is how you demonstrate that you have the professional knowledge and skills required for the German profession you want to enter. It does not compare diploma titles or module lists. The documents were already assessed before this point.

Assessed on documents

Training content, duration, professional experience and further evidence are compared with the German reference profession.

Demonstrated in an examination

Professional knowledge, its application in occupational situations and professional decision-making are demonstrated against the German professional standard.

Result

Evidence of the professional knowledge required for the profession. Further requirements for professional licensing can still apply.

Change of legal framework · academic health professions

Two different states: please note which one applies at the time you read this.

Current · until 31 October 2026

The profession-specific recognition framework applies as before.

For third-country qualifications, the equivalence of the qualification is assessed first; where substantial differences are established, the applicable compensation measure follows from the relevant professional act.

From 1 November 2026 · medicine, dentistry, pharmacy

For third-country qualifications, the direct Kenntnisprüfung becomes the standard route.

The document-based equivalence assessment remains available on request. In this model the examination is designed as a licensing examination against a uniform professional standard, not only as a check of individually identified gaps.

Dates are stated explicitly because this page is legally sensitive. Please verify the rules currently in force with the authority competent for your profession before you make any decision.

Profession and qualification origin

Your profession and your recognition route decide whether a Kenntnisprüfung is relevant

The Kenntnisprüfung is most visible in regulated health professions. Other regulated and non-regulated professions can follow completely different routes. The groups below show the range: they are not a complete list of professions.

Academic health professions

Doctor · dentist · pharmacist

Their own licensing law, with a separate professional-language examination and, from 1 November 2026, a changed procedural logic for third-country qualifications.

Nursing & health professions

Nursing professionals · therapeutic and medical-technology professions

Depending on the profession and the origin of the qualification, the route can involve a Kenntnisprüfung, an Eignungsprüfung or an Anpassungslehrgang.

Other regulated professions

For example teaching and other legally protected professions

Compensation measures exist here too, but they are not always called a Kenntnisprüfung and are not always organised in the same way.

Non-regulated professions

Most dual training occupations and many academic professions

A different logic applies: equivalence assessment and, where relevant, an Anpassungsqualifizierung instead of a statutory examination route.

Qualification from a third country

In relevant health-profession contexts, the Kenntnisprüfung is the compensation route associated with qualifications obtained outside the EU, the EEA and Switzerland.

Qualification from the EU, the EEA or Switzerland

Depending on the profession, recognition can be automatic, or a different mechanism, such as an Eignungsprüfung or an Anpassungslehrgang, can apply.

Important limitation

This origin rule does not apply to every profession in the same way. Some professional acts provide for a choice between measures; others do not.

Examination scope

What is examined depends on the German profession

A Kenntnisprüfung is profession-specific. Content, format, scope and organisation follow the professional law that governs the profession and the examination structure competent for it.

Medicine

Professional medical knowledge and clinical competence, in the format set out in the applicable licensing examination framework, in practice with oral and practical components.

Pharmacy

Nursing & health professions

Profession-specific competence, frequently in application-oriented formats with practical and oral parts, following the relevant examination regulation.

Examples only. The exact format, scope and requirements depend on the profession, the applicable regulation and the responsible examination body.

For that reason this page publishes no universal question catalogue, no universal duration, no pass mark and no universal number of attempts. Those figures differ by profession and examination law.

Different names, different questions

Kenntnisprüfung, Eignungsprüfung, Fachsprachprüfung and Anpassungslehrgang are not the same thing

These terms are not interchangeable, and they are not a menu you choose from. Each belongs to particular professions, procedures and legal contexts. Select a term to see the question it answers.

Know which requirement you are solving before you book anything.

Dedicated pages on the Eignungsprüfung, the Anpassungslehrgang and the Anpassungsqualifizierung are in preparation in this series.

Roles in the procedure

The competent authority determines the pathway: the course provider does not

Depending on the profession, the competent authority, the licensing body and the organisation that runs the examination can be different institutions. Which authority is responsible depends on the profession and, in many cases, on the federal state. There is no single national office for all professions.

Competent authority

Receives the application, applies the statutory route, issues the decision and confirms which measure is required.

Examination body

Organises the examination, appoints examiners, communicates the procedure and issues the result.

Chamber or professional body

Depending on the profession: regulatory, examining, advisory or organisational functions.

Course provider

Prepares candidates and delivers teaching. Does not determine the official recognition outcome.

Result

Differences identified

Responsible next step

Who continues the procedure, and what has to be submitted?

In many current recognition procedures, the decision also identifies the differences and the available compensation measure. That is a useful orientation, but not the same procedural logic in every case, which is why the professional law applying to you and the authority responsible for you remain the binding reference.

Before you book a preparation course

Found a course? First check what it actually prepares you for.

Which profession is the course designed for?

Does it fit the route stated in your own procedure?

Which costs arise, and which documents are required?

Is the course itself mandatory, or is it preparation only?

Your next step depends on your professional context

proceda brings your professional profile, your qualification context and your process information together, so you can place a measure like the Kenntnisprüfung in your own pathway instead of in a general article.

From orientation to preparation

Once you know your examination route, the right preparation begins

Only when it is clear which examination or measure applies to your profession does the next question become useful: how do you prepare for it, and which course actually fits your procedure?

Passing an examination can complete the professional-knowledge requirement. Language, personal reliability, health suitability and further formal requirements can remain separate conditions for professional licensing.
